Classroom Library

First, I would like to thank you again for taking interest in my project. My kids are so excited about the new books and the variety they now have to chose from. As for the bookshelf, they are in love. I have one student who has deemed himself the class Liberian to keep the bookshelf neat.

The students in my class have a reading deficit. They are delayed in their reading level and are not on the same level as other students their age. One of the things we work on my class is actual reading. In my order, I received some class sets of books. With those class sets we sit in a circle and take turns reading. The students like to popcorn, or choose me to read as well. During that reading time we talk about what we read and work on reading comprehension. We talk about character traits, setting, main ideas, plot, etc.

Reading in my classroom appears in several different ways. 1) We read together in class as mentioned above. This helps me work with the students on words they may not understand, or helping them build their reading comprehension. 2) Extra time after work is completed is used to read a book. They chose a book to read and then take an AR test afterward to see how well they comprehended the book. 3) And finally, we have DEAR days. Drop Everything And Read days. These are days were I suspend the lesson and we read.

I cannot pick one particular student who loves the books more then others. I cannot tell you how many times I hear my students say, "I can't believe these people helped us get new books." Another famous saying lately in my room is, "We didn't have many books before, but look at all these books we have to pick from. Those people must like us."

My students have a 10 week goal of AR points for them to reach. The eagerly get books when they have a chance. They also like to try to out read their teacher. Yes, they have set a goal for me to read as well.

I cannot thank you again for investing in my students and their reading. I am anxious to see their growth. I will leave you with this one statistic. Out of 16 students who took a test on their level in my room, 14 raised their reading points in one month.”

With gratitude,

Mrs. Wilhelm
