Jiu Jitsu and Life
Funded Feb 25, 2018Every Monday and Tuesday morning, first period, we have Jiu Jitsu Club. Its only about 10 of us. In our first few session we have worked on scissor sweep from closed guard, rear naked choke, and americana from side control. The students are lined up in the morning ready for the lesson without me calling for them. When the students see me in the hallway they whisper, "What are we learning next in Jiu Jitsu?" They are super excited.
The students saw the wrestling mat for the first time, and said "Were going to be using that?" Now when they see a kid walking toward the mat, to ask us what we are doing they scream, "Don't step on the mat with your dirty shoes." That mat is their special place, to be respected.
I'm excited to show the students a couple more moves by the end of the year. I'm very excited for next year though. The momentum from this year will help out next year. I want to be able to open up the club to as many students as I can starting in September. Maybe get some guest speakers, who knows. The first thing I want to work on is taking the socks off (They felt more comfortable with socks on for now) and getting rashguards or at least T-shirt and shorts as Jiu Jitsu uniforms.”

Physical Education Cool Down
Funded Feb 5, 2018Thank you very much for your very generous donation. When I told the students that we will have an air conditioner in the gym during the sweltering months of May and June they were cheering. Yesterday was a day before a major snowstorm in New York and you should have seen the sweat pouring off the students. The air conditioner will be a huge asset during the late spring.
Last year on a very hot day one girl fell very ill in the gym. I had to walk her down the four flights of stairs to bring her to the nurse. The heat got to her. Knowing that an issue like that will not occur this year because of your generous donation means a lot to my students and to me as well. Thank you very much.”
