My students are used to having the support of multiple instructors in my classroom. During distance learning we have been providing paper packets as well as making phone calls and sending letters through traditional mail weekly. However my students also have access to Google Classroom, Google Meet and our online academic curriculum Unique Learning System. All three of these programs have apps that can be installed on the kindle. Unfortunately my class does not Qualify for funding through the CARES Act because my classroom is in a building ran by the local (County) Intermediate School District. My students could not use the laptops that act may provide even if those funds were an option. They need an easy touch interface to be successful in both our online interactive curriculum and to see teachers on Google Meet! I wish for all kids to be able to have user friendly technology to help them feel connected to school staff and each other. Distance learning has been so isolating for my high risk students. Their progress with communication and social skills are also negatively impacted by this social isolation. I was able to make a video call on the phone of a parent this semester where a non verbal student smiled and laughed and even signed to me! He was so happy! I cannot express how important and vital it is that these students maintain those social connections to their school team! Please help me put that same smile on all of their faces and 'Keep Kids Communicating'!
