Can you guess the #1 favorite drink of my students? If "soda" was your first thought, you're absolutely correct. That probably didn't even surprise you, did it? But this is where we come in! We could help change that by encouraging frequent water drinking. Once they leave our campus, my students are surrounded by choices for unhealthy drinks: sodas, "juices" in pouches with little nutritional value, and high-calorie drinks like canned iced teas. To promote healthy drinking habits in my students, I would like for each to have a reusable water bottle. Students would be encouraged to drink from them in class, which would reinforce how important it is to keep hydrated throughout the day. In addition, students would learn about the amount of sugar in the drinks that they currently prefer. This excess of sugary drinks is one factor in increased obesity rates in children. Therefore, it is imperative that they learn now about the benefits of water and the dangers of sugary drinks, so that as they get older, they do not continue to reach for that soda each time they get thirsty. Being encouraged to drink water throughout the day will help students accomplish this goal. Your support will help us get closer to the day when students say their #1 favorite drink is water.
