More than 50 percent of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch and more than 10 percent are learning English as a second language. We are a Title I school, but despite the difficulties that many of these students face in their personal lives, many of them have chosen to explore literature and writing for their electives.
In addition to freshmen English, I teach Journalism Foundations and an elective course on dystopian literature at our school. It is my hope that the courses I teach will foster an environment where they love to read and write, and continue to grow both as students and individuals. Creating a newspaper among student journalists has been one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever taken part of, and am so grateful for those who are willing to support these aspiring writers, photographers and future professionals.
