Many students with special needs are often just one step away from a light bulb moment. The solved math problem is missing a decimal. The read word is missing a sound. They are thinking, they are trying every approach they can, but the connection just doesn't click. In our middle school resource classroom, my students are fortunate, yet something is still missing. The class sizes are small. They have fantastic general education teachers who differentiate for them. They even have school-provided laptops. However, they need tools that will allow the technology to be truly effective for their personal learning styles. For instance, wireless mice and styluses will allow students to interact with their laptops despite poor fine motor skills. For auditory learners, text to speech is one of our most used programs, yet kids can't use it to take tests without suitable headphones. We have a wonderful room, yet it lacks a way to display the students' online curriculum for group interventions. A SMART TV, with a wireless adapter would allow my resource teaching to better match what the students need to adapt to in their core classes. With math, for instance, they would benefit from having online examples to follow along within resource class and then watch again at home. This can be made possible with Camtasia Studios software and a handwriting interface pad. Middle school is such a critical time for students. Our school and our staff are working hard to overcome disabilities that make learning difficult for some of our kids. These technology tools will be what helps us make the lasting connection that they deserve. Thank you for being the link.
