The project and materials I have chosen will help promote NCAVS by providing students with multiple opportunities to work on their reading and writing skill while spending time talking and working on their social, emotional, and mental health skills and mindset.
By choosing a variety of books for the students to read I will be hitting RL.4.1, RL.4.2, RL.4.3, RL.4.6, RL.4.9 by doing discussions after each of our readings. I will work with the students to ensure that they are understanding of what skill we are working on and how it relates to them, their peers, their teachers, and anyone else in their lives. Another way I will utilize the books for my classroom will be by having the students do journaling or completing writing prompts related to the skill in the story; this will be W.4.1, W.4.3, W.4.5. Since we will be doing many of these activities as a class, the students will be doing sharing which will hit some of our speaking and listening standards as well; SL.4.1, SL.4.2, SL.4.3, SL.4.4.
Some of the other items I have included in the project are writing and discussion prompts. I also have picked some stress balls, wobble cushions, and a bookshelf to store all of these items. Wobble cushions allow students to focus by allowing a way for them to get the wiggles out.
By doing reading, writing, and discussions on social, emotional, and mental health I will be fulfilling a COVID-related learning need in my class because a majority of my students have not been in a classroom for over 18 months which has not allowed them to work on these fundamental skills needed to act within the societal guidelines of social behaviors. These skills will last them a lifetime and promote good norms throughout their years of schooling.
