The world today can be a scary place for children. They are often exposed to images and language that can cause them to fear the differences in others, rather than celebrate them. The classroom should be a place where all of those different types of people can come together to learn and grow from each other. One day I looked around at the beautiful faces looking back at me and realized that I don't have books that represent all of them. The diverse books in this project would allow my students to read stories with characters that not only look like them, but also look like the people around them, including their teacher! These books also cover a range of reading levels, writing styles and categories so I can engage all of my learners. First grade is where children really start reading and I aim to foster a love of reading in my students. Representation matters and having stories that they can connect with will make reading even more engaging. It's exciting to see yourself, your family and your world reflected in a book! I want all of my students to be able to experience that. I teach my students that the world would be a very boring place if we all looked the same. Our differences are meant to be explored and celebrated. I hope these books will help shine a light on the beauty in diversity for my students.
