Science is a huge part of our pre-k classroom. It teaches the students to be curious and ask questions during exploration. It encourages them to communicate with one another on their findings and observations. It especially engages the students who don't speak English or the children with special needs who are able to observe and interact in the science center independently. All our students have become more confident, independent and responsible. After recently reading A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle, the students have become fascinated with the way hermit crabs create a home with their shell. When getting our class pet hermit crabs, we will be learning all about what hermit crabs eat, how they make a home out of new shells once they've outgrown theirs, and how they interact with each other. Students will observe and take care of crabs on a daily basis and keep a science journal where they can draw what they observe. Students will not only learn about the lifestyle of hermit crabs but they will also learn independence and responsibility by having to take care of a class pet. Let's give hermit crab a new home in our class!
