  • Magnetic Manipulatives for Math Understanding

    Funded Sep 12, 2024

Thank you for your kind and generous donations. With these funds, our class received magnetic base ten blocks, magnetic coins, and magnetic fraction pieces. These are all easily showcased on my white board, and students can easily refer to them. They are easily visible, and easily manipulated, which helps to explain math concepts more clearly. For example, we keep track of the passing number of school days. Yesterday was day 67, so we built the number 67 in coins and with base ten blocks. We also review other ways to build the number with the magnets.”

  • Classroom Basics to Start the Year

    Funded Oct 11, 2022

Thank you so much for your kind contributions. Your contributions helped my classroom start off on the right foot. The Kleenex boxes, pencils, markers, and laminating materials were all very helpful. The high quality pencils helped my students to keep working on their math calculations and narrative stories the entire school year. In addition, the laminating machine helped me to safeguard important paperwork that we returned to multiple times throughout the year, and the markers helped my students to write on them.”

  • Calming Area

    Funded Jan 5, 2023

Thanks again for your kind contributions. Students were so excited when they viewed the big bean bags. I have used these to give students a break when they need one. I noticed that it allows students to relax and calm down a bit. In addition, I have used these as a place to sit while they are reading.

Besides the big bean bags, my project included tactile objects that also calm down students. I actually used one today. A student was feeling overwhelmed because of an assessment. I quietly brought him the item, and it brought him a sense of relaxation. After a while, he was able to go about his day.”

    Mr. M.

  • STEAM for Hands-On Learning

    Funded Apr 13, 2022

Thanks again for your kind contributions! My students have had an absolute blast using the hands-on materials included in this project. When they saw that they could create a robot and manipulate its function they were thrilled!

Though students view these projects as "fun", there are some critical lessons that they learn along the way. They have to balance the appearance of the robot with its ability to function. In addition, they have had to work together and collaborate as a team or group, which is not always easy for students (or adults).”

  • Ready and Revved for Learning!

    Funded Jul 28, 2021

Thank you so much for your generous donations. My students were thrilled to use the STEM Master and Marble Run sets. These activities are highly engaging and they lend themselves to creativity. I put students into groups to first explore the materials. It was interesting to see students collaborate with each other. This is a highly important skill that doesn't always come natural for students. However, I was pleased to see that students were sharing and showing their creations with each other.

I noted that the kit instructions had some additional challenges that students could engage with. In the future, I would like to challenge students to build the tallest and fastest structure possible.”

  • Books for Inclusion, Acceptance, and Sensitivity

    Funded Apr 6, 2021

The books that were a part of this project have been read and re-read many times. On the first day of school, I placed each book in our classroom library. Students were so excited to read about the amazing people in these books.

Students were particularly interested and disappointed in the way these women were not encouraged to pursue their dreams of working in scientific fields. At any rate, they were inspired by their tenacity and their determination to follow their dreams anyway. Even though it's been weeks since we have read some of these books, students still make connections to the perseverance that those individuals showed.

In addition to being read during Readers Workshop, I also read several to the class as Interactive Read Aloud. The books prompted many discussions and inferences.”

  • Drumming for Mindfulness, Drumming for Math

    Funded Jul 26, 2020

Thank you so much for our set of classroom drums. We have used these to discover patterns, develop our own tapping patterns, or simply for fun. When I first placed the drums on my desk, students became very excited. I could tell that they were hoping that I would pass them out, so they can get their hands on them. They ask for time each day to explore new beats, as well just to blow off some steam. We will soon use these drums to practice our multiplication facts by tapping out the multiples of each number!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. M.

  • Going the Distance

    Funded Oct 23, 2020

Thank you so much for your generous contributions. With these donations, I was able to buy high quality notebooks, pens, and pencils for my students to use at home, as well as in the classroom. These materials seem simple, but they are sometimes taken for granted. They were used to write science notes, informational writing drafts, as well as to solve mathematical equations. Students were so happy when they either picked up the materials to use at home, or when they noticed them waiting on their desks when they returned to our classroom.”

  • Diversity for a New Day

    Funded Sep 23, 2019

Thank you so much for your generous donations. My students were thrilled when I unopened the box and pulled out these wonderful titles. After I placed them on the shelf, students lined up to eagerly inspect them and read them.

One student read the book Martin Luther King Jr. and the March on Washington and enthusiastically showed me what he learned. He showed me his favorite pictures and recounted what he learned. Another student's favorite selection was New Shoes. He has enjoyed reading and re-reading this book.

During Readers' Workshop, students have been working on figuring out the meaning of unknown words, inferring, and point of view. These books have been engaging and they have made it easier for students to want to practice these reading comprehension skills.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. M.

  • Engineering Hope: Engineering Aid Drop Packages

    Funded Mar 23, 2019

Thanks again for your generous donations. We have been working through the Emergency Aid Kit STEAM activities and we have been having a great time. The lessons and activities have been engaging and fun.

I appreciate how this program sets up a real life scenario and connects it with each

STEAM activity. For example, they mention how emergency aid packages are sent when a country experiences a natural disaster. The packages can include food, water, and medical supplies. Students then tested 4 different packages to see their efficacy. This taught them about real life humanitarian efforts, as well as challenges in ensuring that supplies reach those in need untarnished.”
