  • Yoga for Middle School

    Funded Sep 16, 2020

Thanks to your generous contributions, I have secured full funding for yoga mats for this coming school year. I know my students will be so excited to learn that their yoga mats came from this incredible community of people who care about them and their physical and mental well-being.

Just as yoga will help my students develop their physical flexibility, this school year requires flexibility on our part, too. I have never taught a Physical Education class before, and to do so while respecting social distancing definitely gives an extra level of difficulty! However, I know that guiding my students in the practice of yoga will help them exercise safely and help them develop practices of self-care they can take with them into adulthood.

I am just overwhelmed with gratitude for my friends, family members, and even strangers who contributed to this project! Namaste!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Reed

  • Good Books in Our Hands!

    Funded Nov 19, 2017

I couldn't believe how quickly my project was funded. Thank you so much for your generosity. So far, my students have been reading the books in voluntary and invitational book clubs, allowing us to stay true to our curriculum while still engaging in the kind of fun, meaningful, social reading that I know will really hook them to be lifelong readers. My students come up at lunch to talk about their books. In their school lives so far, they have had very limited experience with reading chapter books for pleasure, and they are learning so much about teenagers whose experiences are different from their own.

I started these book clubs through invitation for students who were ready for extra reading, but it quickly morphed into a volunteer situation when students started asking if they could be included, too. The books we started with, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian for the boys and Flipped for the girls, are two of my absolute favorites, and I love watching my students respond to their humor and heart.

I told them that these books are available to us through your generosity, and they are incredibly grateful. The life lesson of charity and giving, I believe, is just as meaningful to them as the lessons they are learning about character development and plot structure!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Reed

My students need books they actually want to read and talk about. With these titles, we will create book clubs that students can actually choose to be in instead of relying on whatever dusty, boring books haven't disappeared from the book closet yet. With these books, my students will begin to see reading as something we do to connect to one another instead of just a way to perform better on a test. I have chosen books that my students will connect to and see themselves in as well as books that will help them see the world from a different perspective.
