I selected a relatively small greenhouse so the students would have the opportunity to experiment with one on one attention to the details of growing flowers, vegetables and herbs. This experience will allow each of my students to become more independent while monitoring the growth of the plants and give them a sense of responsibility of caring for something as well as a sense of pride with their successes! It is my goal to have them grow items that they can then determine what is edible, what is decorative and from where scents are derived to emphasize the school-based enterprise we started using essential oils to create bath scrubs and salts. I feel strongly that having a greenhouse will give them a chance to develop a skill that they can actually use in their community while learning the basics of agriculture. Being in a beach community, I feel that it is not as evident as it might be in other areas of North Carolina where agricultural products come from as well as the process of growing plants and vegetables. I feel that it would be very beneficial for any student to learn how to successfully care for plants but especially so for the special education population. It is my goal to have a small greenhouse that we can grow seasonal plants and vegetables to enhance the learning process and establish a sense of responsibility. Any additional skills that my students can aquire will be beneficial for them later as they become more independent and as productive members of their community.
