I teach at a Title I school with many students lacking basic skills. Reading and writing can be very hard for them. Many students come to school hungry and lacking the basic needs for starting their day off right. With that said, these students want to learn and crave attention. I have very few discipline problems because they love to come to the library. It is a wonderful escape for them. I have one small Kid K'nex box and and container of blocks that some students have had the chance to explore with. They love being creative and showing me what they have made. I believe the excitement for these items is mostly due to the fact that kid friendly building materials are not accessible in their homes.
