  • Ready to Read!

    Funded Mar 4, 2020

Oh my goodness, oh my goodness, oh my goodness!! Y'all are fabulous! I cannot wait to show and read to our students these gorgeous and fantabulously written read-alouds. This means so much to me and to those students who will get to work with them. Thank you so much!!”

  • Diverse Reading for our Classroom

    Funded Aug 7, 2019

With these books, my students get to see people who look like them and people in their community. As my kids are in kindergarten so most of them cannot read at this time of year. But, I teach them how to read a book without knowing the words.

I have them look at the people carefully and think about what they might be saying or thinking. Look at their body language. Why are they acting like that? What might happen on the next page that would go with that picture.

Then after I have read the book to them, they like to look at the book on their own and look closer at the pictures since they know what is happening in the book. So, even if they cannot technically read, they can read their way.”

  • Help Us Be Scientists!

    Funded May 27, 2019

The items that you bought for our classroom are a big hit! We have a big forest located behind our school and we used these items to do experiments in the woods. They have looked at so many different bugs and plants that I have to take my phone with me to help identify them.

When I opened the box and they saw the goggles and lab coats, they were so happy. A few of them said, "We will be real scientists!!". I did explain that even without them, they are still scientists but the items help with the realness of it. They were excited that they would not get their clothes messy when learning about Science.

The kids are now wanting me to do bigger and more exciting experiments with them.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Shrader

  • Books for Our Classroom!

    Funded Jan 31, 2016

I use the books in my classroom in many, many ways and to teach many, many things. We received biographies that will help explain what things were like when that person was growing up, from the Civil War or the Depression. Many of the students in my class are not able to visit museums in other states because of financial issues. These books help them visualize in their mind what things might have looked like during that era. They can compare and contrast the differences between then and now. Some of the books were about people who are currently living but these students will most likely not get to meet them in person (George Lucas or Steven Spielberg) so these books will help them understand them.

Reading takes many different forms. As you can tell from the photos included, if the weather is nice, we will go outside to read. If the weather isn't good, then they can use a pillow in the classroom to get comfortable. The students are able to choose whatever books that might interest them.

I have several students in my class that already had a love of reading before coming to my classroom. My hope was that I would get several more by the end of the year. I was successful with some more, especially one in particular. At the beginning of the year, he came into my classroom telling me that he hated to read. By the end of the year, he had read almost all of the books in my library. He truly learned to love reading. His father informed me that he used to beg for money to buy video games but now he uses the money for books. He used to be on his phone in bed at night, but now he goes to sleep with a book in his hand. His father is extremely thankful.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Shrader

We are a kindergarten through fifth grade urban school. We are a very diverse community that features hands-on learning and integrated classroom activities. My students sometimes enter 5th grade not liking reading, but by the end of the year most have changed their mind because of my Reader’s Workshop approach.
