The requested materials will make a difference in my students' lives by helping them learn and understand it's okay that everyone experiences a range of emotions. Students who have difficulty "reading" faces will experiment by creating facial features using a variety of textured playdough on special mat. Textured playdough provides a needed sensory input while this specific activity encourages students to explore the facial features of different emotions. Textured playdough is a calming material and a quiet activity to help a student in emotional distress. A platform swing which will attach to an existing stand currently in my classroom will give my students needed swinging motion to help them calm themselves when upset. My students will use these tools to learn to identify and work through their emotions as well as learn that their actions can affect others! Colorful, engaging read aloud books and books written at student's reading levels will be valuable resources to help my students learn to identify their own feelings. Students will also learn how their feelings lead to their behavior choices which impact others. As students match up pairs of self-correcting puzzles depicting everyday school scenarios students may encounter along with a positive outcome, they will learn and practice the best way to handle difficult situations.
