My students are from a rural part of central Pennsylvania. We have a high ratio of free and reduced lunches. Most of my students have never been to an art museum or art exhibit outside of school. Yet, for many of them art class is the best part of their day. I encourage them to explore the possibilities of the world in a creative and self expressive manner. Often art becomes a means for them to cope with difficult or traumatic experiences. The art room becomes a safe haven and a place where the are recognized for their talents. Art teaches students to persevere, make decisions, work through complex processes, and use their creative voices to communicate. Many of my students have gone on to careers in the arts or a related field. The skills that they gain in the visual art room are such that they translate across many other areas. My students who go into arts careers do well in the world because of their strong work ethic and experience thinking both critically and creatively.
