Students come to our art room wanting to make and create! But how they do it is as unique as each student who enters. As I look around the room, my artists have different ways they express themselves. Some are standing at their table painting, some are sitting, some like more movement. Some like to work with classmates, while others benefit from having a special space all their own to focus on their ideas for their artwork. The traditional art room space no longer works for my untraditional artists. I am looking to create a space where each student can choose how they create their art. Whether it be standing, sitting, together, or apart. I would like them to have a more flexible space to make. The art room vision for my students, is to have a space for stand up tables (which I currently have), some seated tables (I have also), and then a few new spaces to identify the other needs for my students. Having a variety of floor seating, where artists can use cushions, clip boards, and even moveable desk tops, will allow students to create their own space that makes those creative juices flow more easily. The beauty of having a variety of spaces within the art room, is that it can constantly change for what art project we are working on. The maker’s space can move, grow and change, just like my students.
