Ask a child what their favorite time in the school day is and many answer with RECESS! Recess is not only a well deserved break in a student's day but serves as a time to build relationships, learn socializing skills, and practice showing respect and consideration for others. Our school adopted the house system for positive reinforcement of basic life skills and manners. Having that system has made not only a huge impact on students' personal growth, but helps build character and creates a purpose for learning. Our school has also started a LEAP program that targets students with special educational needs from self inclusion classrooms and mainstreams them into a grade level appropriate recess time as well as a portion of regular classroom instruction. With the use of the house system I hope to instill the same values in students during the one time of day that they have to socialize with one another. Recess is the perfect time to teach all students tolerance, patience, and understanding. We are asking for recess equipment such as kick balls, hula hoops, jump ropes, and basket balls for our existing goals. These supplies will and be used by 85 students. It is our hope that through a structured and engaging recess that we foster tolerance and acceptance in each of our students. We hope they see that each child has strengths, weaknesses, and areas of growth both in the classroom and out. Learning that disagreements happen and conflict of interests are normal is an important part of growing and learning. When we teach students to have great communication and respect for others and that we become better people in the process.
