Virtual Science on the Move!

Funded Sep 30, 2020

Thank you very much for your generosity! Your wonderful gift has truly helped me bring science to the homes of my students during this very unique school year. I was at first very concerned with how I would keep my students engaged with science when I couldn't be physically with them. Your gift allowed me to record high quality videos of myself performing labs from my kitchen, so students would be able to perform labs in their own kitchens. The AirPods not only ensured I had clear, crisp audio when stating procedures, but allowed me to demonstrate the procedures freely in my kitchen lab space without the worry of getting tangled in the cords of headphones and microphones.

My students expressed that they enjoyed and appreciated the detailed step-by-step video lab procedures I made for them. The video tutorials allowed students to look at specimens of their choice with a paper microscope, explore the special properties of a biopolymer (Jell-o!), and even investigate the nanoscale wettability of different surfaces at home! This is what some of my students had to say about the lab videos:

"The video procedures were easy to follow and were understandable."

"I liked how clearly you spoke and you made it look easy."

"Video seems more interactive to me and easier than reading since I can listen and do it at the same time."

"The procedures were very clear :D"

"I like how the video procedures made it seem like we were in a classroom with Ms. Kim, also how easy it was to follow along with the lab."

I cannot thank you all for helping my students' curiosity for science to continue in spite of being at home for the entire school year. Here is evidence that you helped my students endure and even enjoy their time at home during this pandemic:

"I had a lot of fun and it was very interesting. My mom and my brother were watching from a distance and thought it was very cool. I liked how its very hands on and how we were able to have an option on what surface to use."

"The Nanoscale Wetting Lab overall was GREAT. I liked how I felt like a real scientist by using the real and special mateirals."

"The lab was really good overall. I liked how it was scientist choice which was really fun."

"Yes I liked the lab, I liked that I got to do something with my hands and not the computer."

"The Foldscope Lab overall was incredible, I saw a lot of surprising things about the things I thought looked normal. Seeing it so up close made it seem unnatural, in a fun way."

"9/10 I liked getting a mini heart attack after seeing a bug on my flower petal under the microscope :D"

"It was fun to make the jello (although I totally made a mess). The salt and pineapple test was my favorite."

"The biopolymer lab overall was pretty fun, had to wait 24 hours, but it was great. I really liked making the jello with my mother though, it was very enjoyable."

Thank you again for helping me share the AWESOMENESS of science with my students!”

With gratitude,

Mrs. Kim
