Book Spine Art Supplies
Funded Dec 7, 2023Thank you for your generous contribution to our classroom! My students were particularly excited to have access to numerous liner pens and the fun shaped scissors. Many had never used them before and were laughing as they experimented with them. I love that sound in my classroom.
I had a number of students using the colored pencils come up to me and ask which color is best or whether it would be okay to blend colors, showing that they were putting significant thought into the artistic choices they were making in relation to the book they were reading. One student was experimenting with reds and wanted to make sure the red was more romantic than horror, because that's the kind of book they read. It seems like such a little thing, but any connection to their reading and creativity is a win for my project purposes.
Unfortunately, I've had to step away from the classroom for a portion of the year due to medical reasons, and I told my students they would not be required to complete a book spine while I was absent. Many of my students asked if they could use the new supplies to make one anyway, just because they wanted to. We are all so grateful that they now have those resources and are choosing to read on their own knowing they have that creative outlet to share their books. Thank you so much for helping to make that happen for them.”

This classroom project was brought to life by The DonorsChoose Community and 6 other donors.Interactive English Notebooks
Funded Aug 16, 2016When students first found out they were receiving these materials, their response was priceless. They were so grateful to have materials already ready for them, and were especially excited to have different colors to work with. A couple of students saw the six packs of highlighters and were thrilled to be able to color code their notes.
The supplies that were donated are being used for Interactive Notebooks in grades 7, 8, and 9. Each notebook page involves having students cut out their notes, which often take different shapes. They cut and fold and glue their pages together, practicing their fine motor and multitasking skills. As they cut and glue, I introduce the subject for the day. When we start working with the notes, the students highlight various sections and often write responses under tabs. On the opposite page of the glued in notes, the students have independent practice where they apply the concept of the day to the novel we are reading in class.
The notebook supplies have already helped many students stay organized and engaged with our lessons, and the kids use them as a resource on assignments and assessments. They immediately grab their notebooks when they enter class, and are sincerely disappointed if we aren't making a new page that day. We will continue using the notebooks as we move through our various reading units. The freshmen are just beginning their literary device pages, while the Jr High students are developing their story element and summarizing skills.
The notebooks have been an amazing instructional strategy for student engagement and content delivery, and we wouldn't have been this successful without your generous donations. Thank you so very much for helping us succeed.”
