  • 10th Grade Immigrant Students with Perfect Attendance to Broadway!

    Funded Aug 13, 2019

As you know, our students come from various countries bringing along their culture to the United States. They are still learning and adapting to New York culture, and taking them to a broadway show was the perfect way to expose them to the city!

Going to see Beetlejuice at Broadway was such a magical experience for our students. Some of them have never seen a play in person, let alone a musical. Students were mesmerized by costumes, makeup, and the stage set up which inspired some to learn more about sfx and halloween makeup. While others were intrigued with acting, as some were not aware that you can be an actor without being on TV.

This was a transformative experience for our students and they saw so much they hadn't seen before! This trip inspired students to continue academic progress and engagement in school not only because they would be rewarded, but because they're able to explore NYC culture with their peers!”

  • Menstrual Pads for International Students!

    Funded Mar 16, 2020

Thank you for providing this basic necessity for our students. Taking care of menstrual needs should be a human right and no one should need to worry about affording pads. It's a great comfort to be able to provide quality pads to our students during their school day. We appreciate your support of our project. It's genuinely appreciated.”

  • Help Keep Immigrant Students Warm in NYC Winter!

    Funded Nov 26, 2019

Our students at International High School at Union Square come from over 50 different countries and regions. A portion of these students come into the country by themselves or with a guardian that is not a parent, and struggle financially. We try to support these students as much as we can through clothing donations, and items received through DonorsChoose. Recently, as the weather got colder, we noticed that students who come from warm climates were not wearing necessary clothing to keep them warm, and some even were not able to afford proper winter wear. Receiving these coats from donors at DonorsChoose was very helpful! Students who needed coats started coming to school more often because they were able to combat the cold weather.

When the winter coats arrived, both students and staff were very ecstatic to see the generosity of the donors from DonorsChoose. The students loved the fact that the coats were very warm, and also that they were stylish as well. They were filled with gratitude, and some students were very emotional because they felt the gesture was heartfelt. Once other students saw that there are other folks outside of the regular school staff who care about them and empathize with them, they started to feel like they belonged here since some students came from their country very recently.

We will continue to seek the support of donors and businesses to help our students meet daily living needs such as clothes, backpacks, school supplies, toiletries etc. These items are essential to impact our students growth, and ensures that they have the proper items to support their school attendance & success!”

  • 9th grade Immigrant Students to Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum

    Funded Nov 21, 2019

We are so happy to be able to provide this opportunity for our students. We know how much this means to them and how memorable these experiences are. Without your support, it honestly would not have been possible. These students are so amazing and deserve all the best so we are grateful for your generosity and giving spirit.”

  • Essential Items for Living!

    Funded Aug 14, 2019

Thank you so much for providing this basic items to us. Since the first day of school, I have already had students looking forward to returning to school where they know they can get basic hygiene items like maxi pads, soap, toothpaste etc.

Many of them have strained economic resources so every dollar counts. Many students live in unstable housing, work full-time and struggle to pay the bills. A lot of them are not living with families and are trying to survive on their own in New York City, work full-time and get their education.

It's so helpful that we can provide these items to them so that they have one less expense to worry about. It also helps students know that school is a place where they are cared for and looked after. We so appreciate your care and concern. Your contribution makes a direct impact on the lives of students.”

  • 10th Graders to Broadway!

    Funded Dec 25, 2018

Thank you so much for your generosity in donating to our students. Myself, a social worker and a 9th/10th grade English teacher brought a group of 13 10th graders with Perfect Attendance and no lateness to see The Phantom of the Opera. This was such a special experience for the students.

The excitement was palpable as we gathered the students and made the trip to Times Square. As we walked through this district, it was such a good feeling to know that our students would have access to this cultural center in their own city. We were not only walking through the neighborhood, but on our way to something special. This was the first time almost all our students have seen a Broadway show.

Once we were seated in the beautiful theater, and the music started there was electricity in the air. The sets, the special effects, the costumes, the dancing and music was just such an exciting experience for all of us. I know that this experience broadened the students viewpoints and will forever be remembered and cherished. Thanks again for your generosity.”

  • Backpacks: A necessity for Our Students!

    Funded Dec 3, 2018

We really appreciate your contribution to our students at International High School. The students really love the backpacks. The students that received the backpacks were pleasantly surprised at how much they could fit in their bags. The different colors and styles are also a big hit among the students that received them.

The backpacks have made the students feel at ease. They are now able to organize their work and reading materials. Now they have one less thing to worry about as they put energy towards their education.

Your willingness to help students with home insecurities lessens the crises in their lives and makes all the difference for students here at IHS.”

  • Yoga and Mindfulness Club!

    Funded Sep 14, 2018

Thank you so much for helping us get yoga mats and blocks into our school! We have been using the yoga mats in gym class, in the yoga club, and even bringing them to other clubs to share yoga with everyone! It has been wonderful to offer these resources to the students. I hope they will begin to associate the yoga mat with a place they can go to for a feeling of peace and respite from their sometimes chaotic lives. I am hoping to lead even more yoga in their gym classes, and will even be leading yoga and meditation in drama and other core curriculum classes! More yoga for everyone!”

  • Essential Items to be in School!

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

When students walked into our office and found out that new coats and backpacks were available, they were so excited, and as well as relieved.

Our students' families sometimes do not have enough financial resources to purchase these items for students, and it is really hard to live in New York as the weather gets colder - without a winter coat! So when your generosity can help students receive what they need to stay warm and attend school, it makes a tremendous difference in their lives.

Students can now walk into school more confidently with their jackets and have a way to carry their papers and worksheets from school. Thus, thank you so much.

Our students appreciate the warmth and utility of these essentials, and please know that you have really made an impact in their daily experiences.”

  • Softball and Soccer Team Support for Underserved NYC High Schoolers

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

Our players were so excited to have new soccer balls and softballs to practice with!

Our students come from many different countries, and there are various difficulties and challenges that come with this transition as they learn to live in a new country. Sports, we have found, can really bring many students together on the field.

The new softball machine and softballs help students learn and practice when they played in the Spring last year. Soccer, which is played in the fall season at school, also helps students interact with each other and work together as a team. As they pass the ball to one another and use different strategies and passes, they gain a sense of belonging and also find a great sense of enjoyment in playing! Thus, your donations of soccer balls and softballs is invaluable to the sports teams at IHS-US. Thank you so much.”
