Our Transitional Kindergarten team will use these books to support important discussions about diversity in our society as well as to teach social emotional and early literacy skills. Our grade level team will be implementing the Social Justice Standards from Teaching Tolerance in addition to our content standards this year and these books are crucial to that important work.
We know that students need books that serve as mirrors and windows. Students need books that act as mirrors and that reflect their own experiences. They also need books that function as windows and help them to understand the experiences of others so that they can build empathy and a critical social consciousness. This grant will make it possible for us to have classroom libraries that reflect the diversity of our community and give our students these mirrors and windows.
