  • First Grade Books Are in High Demand in My Classroom.

    Funded Jan 5, 2025

Thank you so much for your generous donations and helping me complete my project. These books will help my students become better readers and enjoy reading as these books are more on their reading level. I'm excited to see my students faces when they see we will now have enough books for them to each have one to read.”

    With gratitude,

    Teacher Figueroa

  • Reusable Materials and Resources

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

Our school district adopted a new curriculum for English Language Arts that relies on the use of computers. The laptops that you so generously donated are helping my students learn how to type, increase their mathematical thinking, and improve in their reading skills. At the end of the school year, my students will be expected to take the state test on computers and are expected to type two paragraphs. Using the laptops at least 3 times a week will help better prepare my students for taking the state test. They will feel confident and more comfortable with typing.

My students love having the laptops in the classroom and having the responsibility of taking care of the laptops. In the past, we have had to go to a computer room with very outdated desktops that did not always work and many students would have to just use Microsoft Paint and sit and create designs for thirty minutes. Now, my students can play educational games, they don't have to worry if their laptop will work or not, and they like the ability to grab a laptop anytime they need to instead of only being able to use the computer lab once a week.

All of my students have adjusted very well to using the laptops. They have all learned how to turn them on, plug them in, how to turn them off, and how to put them away. They have learned how to input username and passwords and how to use QR codes. Having only 5 laptops, they have learned that they may not always get on a laptop each day and they do not give me any grief over that. Many have enjoyed the learning games so much, that they have requested to take home their username and passwords so they can access the games at home as well.

Having these laptops in the classroom has made such a positive impact in my classroom. Thank you again for your generous donation.”

    With gratitude,

  • Ready For A Read Aloud?

    Funded Nov 9, 2017

Thank you for your generous donations and supplying my classroom with books for our writing units. I have four writing units that I must teach each school year and each unit requires books to read aloud to the class. These books are used as guides, examples, and inspiration to help with students' writing.

For example, one of the writing units I must teach is opinion writing. The books Red is Best and The Perfect Pet help teach students that we all think and feel different things. The kid in the Red is Best book thinks red is the best color. We are able to have a class discussion on what we think is the best color and then write why we think the color we picked is the best.

Without these books, I would be spending my weekends traveling from public library to public library hunting for the books. Before using Donors Choose and requesting these books, I ran across problems such as the books not available because they were already checked out, or keeping the books longer than the library allows and having late fees. Now, I don't have to worry. I will be able to reuse these books year after year and know I will not need to go searching for them.”

    With gratitude,

    Teacher Figueroa

My school's adopted writing curriculum was not student and teacher friendly. Students were often confused and could not meet expectations. Knowing my students, I made the decision to change the writing curriculum that was simplified, better aligned with the state standards, and actually taught the skills the students really needed. 1st-graders need to be read to daily to help improve reading skills. With the new writing curriculum, there are suggested read-aloud books that help teach a specific writing strategy or concept. These books will help me teach those specific skills that will improve student's writing. Having a permanent teacher set of the read-aloud books will ensure that I will have the suggested book available at all times. I would no longer need to rely on the public library and fear that the books won't be available.
