Building Our Reading Muscles!!!
Funded Jan 26, 2018Due To your generosity of these nonfiction books, the students' love for reading has increased as well as their reading comprehension of informational texts. Now that nonfiction books have become available, my students are much stronger in identifying the difference between a nonfiction and fiction text. They are able to share information with others from what they've learned. Because of these new books, we are able to teach lessons on vocabulary, strategies of decoding words by using pictures and meaning, understanding text features as well as the authors purpose for writing each book. This also encouraged students to write their own informational books about topics that they are very knowledgeable about. I again thank you for ensuring that this dream came true for my class. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Funded Dec 22, 2017When my students first saw the materials they were excited to open it and try it out. My students are using these new activities to build their problem solving skills and to get a deeper understanding of the engineering process. They are observing, making educated guesses, revising their own work and reflecting to peers what their opinion of the activities were. The students tried to competed against each other of whose marble can roll the furthest even with obstacles in the way like felt paper. They began to test their idea and used measuring tape to compare the difference between the two marble runs. While having fun, the students were incorporating, science and math.
The next step for my classroom is to create a maker space in my classroom where students can go and complete activities like this everyday as an early finishers activity. To make engineering activities apart of the everyday curriculum.”

Funded Oct 17, 2017During science and math, my students are no longer required to sit in their seats and engage in a teacher-led lesson. Students have now been giving the go ahead to become explorers Due to your contribution, you've have turned my first graders into little engineers, where they are designing, building and creating structures they see in their mind. Through these activities we were able to incorporate writing pieces of how to steps where students are able to give instructions to others on how they built their structures.
When First glancing upon these materials, the classroom erupted with clapping and laughs of excitement. The anticipation began to grow of all the things they could with the materials.
As we incorporate more STEM in our current units of study, students are given the opportunity to brainstorm for 4 days on a structure they would like to build. Every Friday will be an opportunity for students to put to action what they've been planning all week.
Thank you once again for making this come true for my students. They will never forget but neither will I.”

Mrs. Thompson
