  • Laptop to Design Engaging Learning Experiences

    Funded Nov 27, 2021

I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone of you for your thoughtfulness. Thank you for your donations to my class project "Laptop to Design Engaging Learning Experiences". Your donations and eventual funding of the project has been an amazing support tool to my everyday day as an educator at P.S. 166.

With your support an Apple Mac Laptop was delivered to me on a November morning. We have all lived through remote learning and zoom meetings for the past years. However, returning to the classroom for in person teaching and learning has presented it's challenges. As we move on to post pandemic era, technology will never have a back row seat. The classroom of today and the future have been transformed to the needs of the times we are now calling the new normal. Our classroom Mac serves as a vehicle for communication with our school community and our world. Our Mac is used in many different ways in our classroom. It is used on a daily base for teacher planning, Google Classroom posting and communication with parents on Dojo. Our Mac facilitates Zoom meetings with Staff, Profesional development with peers with the school and district, and provides the necessary zoom meeting with students that are not able to be in person. On those November days as I watched your donations come in, I was truly moved by your kindness. I hope our Mac, the children and I make you proud as we take the school year 2021-2022 for a click.”

    With gratitude,

    Teacher Mrs. Ureña

  • Technology + Curiosity = Researchers

    Funded Jul 17, 2017

Here we are end of October, we have been in school for some 35 days now. It feels longer, way longer. Back in the summer I received the awesome news that my project had been funded. Great news to receive, even though we were on vacation break. We never stop thinking about the ways we will improve learning in our classrooms. We never take a break from that feeling. I had asked for a computer to use in my classroom. I have an old computer in the room which I have been told could not be upgraded at this point.

The computer that you funded connects to a smart board which projects all my lessons. A document reader also gets connected to the computer as well as an ipad. I know, what happened to chalk?

The computer together with the smart board are my main resources to teach. I also use the laptop to connect to the ipad to project videos and music selections. During writing time and independent reading time we play classical music. Through out the day we have "Power Brain" breaks, during this time we listen to relaxing music. Students also have the opportunity to work on the laptop when I am not using it. They have the liberty to work independently or with a partner.

As you can see your kindness goes a long way in my classroom. Thank you for your support and care.”

    With gratitude,

    Teacher Mrs. Ureña

  • Learning Language Through Music

    Funded Jan 21, 2016

    Dear Donors,

¡Hola! I teach an amazing group of students in Long Island City, New York. They are enrolled in a Dual Language Program with the Department of Education. This is their third year in the program. They enjoy learning a second language through movements and music. I set out to receive a rug for our meeting area and a bluetooth speaker to connect to the class iPod. I was fortune enough to receive these donations with an added bonus that our rug was a bilingual one.😀

When we first received the rug, the students were so excited "emocionados". To be honest I was too. I couldn't wait for the custodial staff to bring it up. I dragged it up with the help of my fellow teacher and friend Mrs. LoPiccolo. Students looked liked they have never seen one of this invention before LOL. It was also special the fact that one of our parent was the liaison with Donor Choose, which made the connection to our project extra special. Ms. Claudia was enthusiastic and helpful through out the funding of our project "Learning Language Through Music".

Some time later we received our bluetooth and we were ready to roll. We love listening and dancing to Spanish music. With your help we do movement throughout the day and we prepare for events and assemblies that take place in our school. You have made us very happy. ¡Muchas Gracias!”

    With gratitude,

    Teacher Mrs. Ureña

This classroom project was brought to life by Perry and Donna Golkin Family Foundation and 4 other donors.
My school is a large, Title I school with a diverse student population from varying economic backgrounds. We educate over 1200 kids from pre-k to 5th grade. Resources can be limited, particularly for music. I teach second graders Spanish in a dual language program (Spanish-English), designed to teach kids fluency in both languages. My students enjoy music, and it increases their interest in learning a new language in a very entertaining way. In my classroom, music is used to remove language barriers. It inspires my students to become creative and independent.
