Many people take for granted the comforts of home. Unfortunately, for my students, this is something that cannot be done. Many of my students don't know where their next meal is coming from or if they will have a bed each night. If they do, they share them with siblings and family members most of the time. How can I expect them to sit in rock hard chairs at small desks with empty bellies and tired minds? I take this part of my job very seriously and want to continually find ways to incorporate my kids' needs and make them feel more at home in my classroom than they do when they get "home." Studies have shown that students learn best and retain information when they are comfortable, respected, and feel safe in their environment. Many of my students have fallen asleep at their desks because they are more comfortable than what they have at home. I am trying to foster a love of learning and reading in my classroom. I would like to have some flexible seating options for my students to choose from to be responsible for their learning. This will foster a community feeling in the room and allow the students more options for group and individual work by allowing them to move to other spaces in the room.
