My students will benefit from using these mentor texts in our classroom for a multitude of reasons. I will be using these mentor texts in conjunction with the 6 Traits of Writing, Writing Thief, The Write Tools, and Write Source, and our Journeys curriculum. I will use books written by experts to help model the writing process. Using mentor texts to guide discussions with their peers can be powerful. For example, deconstructing the text by asking themselves, what features are being used, why did the author choose those words or phrases, what text evidence was used, will be essential in their learning. The use of these books will make my lessons more interactive and engaging. This also allows us to use good examples from the mentor texts to discuss what a good sentence looks like, parts of speech, and word choice. I will also use these as models for the narrative, informative, persuasive writing. Students will, in the beginning, want to almost copy the experts ideas but eventually they will build confidence in their own writing skills and build their own great pieces of work.
I want my students to become motivated writers, and using mentor texts written by great writers will help provide support and guidance for them to grow into the dynamic authors I know they can become! At times I feel that my students lack the confidence to experiment within the writing process. Using great pieces of literature to demonstrate good writing will help build their confidence as they work through the writing process.
I will use these mentor texts to create engaging and interactive writing lessons. For example, I will use texts rich in vocabulary when focusing on word choice and descriptive sentence lessons. This also helps them expand their vocabulary. These texts are a valuable resource!
