In my sixth-seventh-eighth grade middle school math classes, I want my students to be comfortable in learning math. My goal is to increase student achievement while providing them a simple choice in seating. Have you ever walked into a coffee shop, prepared to spend some time working or reading? The choices are as varied as the customers: each person has a different need for feeling comfortable in spending time in that space. In the same way, I want my students to find a comfortable seat that matches their learning style and provides a way for them to fidget and move while they learn. I've chosen two different styles of seats. The first style is a yoga-style ball that increases "blood flow to the brain, helping to improve concentration and increase focus, reduce restlessness, and prevent boredom and distractions in class by keeping the body active and the mind engaged." The other is stool style that "allows a wide range of motion so when energy hits, kids can stay on task." Both styles promote good posture and balance. These seats will be used at stations where students will be provided choices to satisfy the learning requirements. I also anticipate these options will inspire my students to get to class early, rather than simply on time. By supporting this initiative, you'll help students manage their own movement and activity during instruction, cutting down on disruptive behavior, and providing a better opportunity for meaningful instruction. I’ll conduct pre and post-assessments asking students to rate their current seating options, and how they think about the chairs provided for their learning and will share this data with my donors. This is my first step in transforming the learning space in my classroom!
