Students with special needs benefit from a variety or modality and choices incorporated into their learning time. My project focuses on items that will help foster independence while working simultaneously on creative play and movement. We currently have a used sand table and some toys, but do not have the sand yet to allow students to explore pouring, sifting, and using their imaginations in independent and group play. A wagon would allow my students to get some "heavy work" done while at the same time give them independence taking PE materials to and from the equipment room to the outdoor PE area. A new parachute would fit right into the wagon and give our class another fun way to fulfill our PE and movement time. My students are really motivated by earning rewards after completing academic tasks. A train set would be a great tool to use as both a reinforcer and a tool to help students learn social play. A gear set and magnatiles are fun ways to incorporate building and engineering skills into our learning. Art time helps student work on eye-hand coordination, color identification, and creative expression. Once we finish a project, we can utilize a new drying rack for our masterpieces.
