As a school, we strive to provide our amazing students with not just the academic foundation they need, but also to impart as much social-emotional learning and knowledge of self-regulation as possible. Due to the pandemic, it has been almost a year and a half since we have had our full student body in school full-time. This has been an unprecedented time for all of us, and our students need even more support than ever to help deal with their BIG feelings effectively. This year, we are creating a Chill Out room, a space where students who need it will be able to practice what they've learned about self-regulation and calming down techniques. The requested items will provide them with some of the tools that will help them down this path to self-regulation, and allow them to return to the classroom calm and ready to learn. During lessons on this topic (via Zoom during the school year and in-person during our summer program), students tried different methods and many found that fidgets, weighted blankets or stuffed animals, working on puzzles or with Legos, or movement were helpful in returning to a calm, ready state of mind. They have also learned some yoga poses and practiced meditation and affirmations. The pillows will give them a soft place to sit if they choose to do their meditation or affirmations on the floor. Thank you to all donors who choose to support our children by contributing towards this much-needed calming space!
