Through your generous donation, my goal is to provide headsets with microphones for my students to fully access the curriculum by being able to have text read to them and by being able to respond orally. It's exciting to be in class and learn all about history, science, and the world around them. Then, students may be asked to read a passage and respond. Ugh. Too many words either are too difficult to read or misread so the meaning is unclear. So, frustrating! The majority of my students read years below their grade level, but when something is read to them, they will understand it. With the headsets connected to a computer, students will be able to have text, worksheets, and articles read and reread to them. They won't be penalized for not knowing the content because of a lower reading ability. They'll be able to learn it!
These headsets will make the curriculum accessible, as students may have text read to them and they will be able to dictate their ideas, which are immediately converted to text on their screen. For those students that get thwarted by their fine motor difficulties in writing and typing, they fall behind when it takes them a long time to write. Through the use of a headset and microphone, students will be able to respond as quickly as they think. It will help with their mechanics and spelling, so the teacher can actually read what they wrote. A student in another class was able to increase his writing score from an 8 out of 30 to a 28 out of 30 on a language arts task. I hope to help all of my students to be able to access the curriculum, perform better, and be successful now and in their future.
