It's so exciting to see what students can do with their imagination and collaboration when they're given a task and a few materials to make it work! Each item on the list has a purpose that corresponds with lessons that have already been planned, and are ready to implement as soon as our materials come in! We will be designing some flying objects during our STEM lessons, and the students are going to need to keep their eyes safe using the safety goggles. It's also beneficial to help them start safe practices early in their science, technology, engineering and math years. Some examples of STEM challenges we will be working on are Flying Hoop Gliders (using straws and index cards), Film Canister Rockets (using film canisters and Alka Seltzer), Marshmallow Catapult (using tongue depressors, marshmallows, and rubber bands), and levitating Ping-Pong balls (using straws, paper clips, and ping pong balls). We will also be engineering designs that don't fly, but are just as engaging. Students will be creating roller coasters using marbles, masking tape, and paper plates, building chairs using index cards that will hold enough weight to support the Three Bears, and designing a pendulum and testing it's speed using kite string, washers, and a stopwatch. Students will also test the design of boats by creating various aluminum foil boats, and will be building pipe-cleaner towers. With your generous donation, students will stay engaged and will understand the importance of perseverance, collaboration, and education!
