Reading Is a Roar
Funded Jul 30, 2024Since receiving the generous funding for a class set of books for our read-aloud sessions, I've seen a remarkable transformation in student engagement and participation. Each student now has the chance to hold their own copy of the book, allowing them to follow along in real-time rather than just listening passively. This simple change has brought a new level of excitement to our reading sessions; students are eager to turn pages and find out what happens next, and they often volunteer to read aloud or discuss predictions with classmates. It's also been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they can now quickly refer to specific parts of the text, not just during reading time but also when we're working on our character trait assignments.
With each student able to review and reference the text on their own, our recent character traits assignment was especially rewarding. Rather than relying on memory, students dove back into the story to uncover text evidence, adding depth and precision to their descriptions. They're learning to support their ideas with concrete details, which is helping them develop stronger analytical skills and a richer understanding of character motivations and development. This project has not only strengthened their reading skills but has made the reading experience more inclusive, accessible, and interactive for everyone in the class. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity, as it has truly enriched our classroom environment and has helped foster a community of enthusiastic, thoughtful readers”

Now Serving...Virtual Book Clubs in Quarantine
Funded Aug 30, 2020I want to thank you for your contributions to my project. It was through this funding I was able to purchase books and digital resources to support book clubs during distance/hybrid learning. Funds received allowed for me to purchase multiple copies of the same titles and distribute them through a drive-by pick up.
Students met weekly to discuss their reading assignments, make predictions, describe and compare characters, and make connections to their texts. With such limited face time this year, book clubs allowed for students to read during their asynchronous time but come prepared to discuss in live group sessions.
For book clubs, I was also able to partner with other 4th grade teachers and we allowed students from different classes to join the various book clubs. Students were then able to interact with other students beyond just our classroom.
Students highly enjoyed book clubs and are looking forward to the next round. Books purchased through this funding will still be available in this next session. Students will have a new opportunity to attend a "tasting" to select their next reading adventure. I can't thank all the donors enough for their contributions in making this come to life. May the new year find you all happy and healthy!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Cunningham
