Digital Storytelling: Using Video to Inspire a Community of Learners
Funded Mar 1, 2017Thank you so much for your generous donation of video equipment to help us kickstart digital storytelling at our school. The students were so excited to see the package arrive; and I, of course, opened it in dramatic fashion in front of them. They were ecstatic to begin using the tripod, mount, and microphones for their newest video production.
In light of our new equipment and what it could offer us, we decided to design a whole learning unit on the filmmaking process. The students were divided into teams and began guided work through the three-phase production process. I have never seen the students so motivated and eager to work towards perfection, knowing that they would be able to use professional production tools to create their own short film. The students had such a memorable time writing, performing, recording and editing their films; learning all that is involved in the filmmaking process. Without your generous donation, this unforgettable experience would never have been possible.
We concluded the unit by hosting a "Night at the Future Museum", where hundreds of parents and community members came to watch the showcases of students from the school. We decorated the classroom like a giant theater, while parents, students, and community members came in to watch the shows and give reviews to the students. The walls were filled with testimonials from the thirty-three students, and how this project helped them become better communicators, collaborators, critical thinkers, and creatives. We even had a green screen photo booth for parents and students to take premiere pictures against a backdrop of their film posters. The whole community left the event with so much pride and excitement for what the students had been able to accomplish.
Thank you for the role you played in making this amazing experience possible for the students and parents of our community. Our goal was to inspire a community of learners through this project, and that is exactly what happened. Our plan for next year is to host three "Night at the Future Musem" events, where even more students can showcase what has traditionally never been expected from this community. We are so grateful for your radical generosity, and can't wait to continue making your investment in us an ongoing source of inspiration.”
