“Providing students with the opportunity to choose their own books to read empowers and encourages them. It strengthens their self-confidence, rewards their interests, and promotes a positive attitude toward reading by valuing the reader and giving him or her a level of control. Readers without power to make their own choices are unmotivated.” ― Donalyn Miller, The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child My students have an independent daily reading (IDR) time every day. They are free to choose their own reading material so long as it is at an appropriate level for them and that they read from a variety of genres. I have found that allowing the students to choose their own books has truly motivated them to read more. They feel proud that I have given them the responsibility to make their own reading choices.
