  • Chromebooks For Critical Thinkers (Part II)

    Funded Mar 9, 2016

    Hello,

This year I walked into a classroom filled with brilliant young people. They are social media experts, loving siblings, dutiful children, loyal friends, and fierce holders of opinions. I had plans to do great things. To guide them to become the best readers, writers, and critical thinkers possible in a 21st century context.

I realized that with the technology available, the road might be a difficult one. When we received funding for this project, my students were ecstatic. It helped to transform our classroom community into a 21st space for learning. Suddenly, they had constant access to any content they wanted. They could communicate with their peers through commenting on each others' writing. They could connect their work to world outside of our four classroom walls.

Without your donation, this work would not have been possible. Thank you for your dedication to my students. It is a honor that are people who see the importance in the work that we are doing in our classroom. I know that we have been successful this school year in critically reading our lives, our world, and texts. Your donation made it possible for us to do that well.

Have a wonderful summer knowing that you changed a classroom for the better.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Bertlesman

When creating the "rules" for our classroom community my students had incredible things to say: "We should be able to engage in our own learning." "English class should go beyond writing essays and reading stories. The world is changing, so we need to learn differently." "English should be fun #turntup" "I do not just want to take tests. I want to write creatively and be able to read other people's expressions." My students are engaged, willing, and determined to be participants in an English class that will embrace their identity and guide them to be better thinkers, readers, and writers. I am constantly astounded by what my ninth grade students have to say critically about their world. Many of them are intimately aware of how to use technology and social media in profound ways. The problem is, we do not have everyday access to technology in our classroom to do so.
