Our school is located on the northwest side of Chicago in a working-class neighborhood. A challenge my students face is a lack of appropriate school funding. Even though we are an urban public school, our poverty rate is relatively low and therefore, we do not receive sufficient discretionary funding based on low-income students to spend on basic classroom items. On top of that, our school's resources are stretched very thin thanks to the district's budget cuts and our state's unfair funding formula.
