I have 20 amazing students in grades 5-8 who are brand new to the United States who are learning English. They come from 9 countries and speak 13 languages. Some are refugees who have never been to school before, and some are immigrants who have been educated in their country. All the students are on free lunch and come from low-income families. My school is considered 90% poverty. I am amazed at my students as they are rarely ever absent, as they love school and a safe pace to come everyday. Even though many of my students have gone through terrible hardships to come to the United States, the students are filled with smiles and excitement for learning and coming to school everyday.
