Maker Space for a New Generation
Funded Nov 6, 2019Thank you so much for your help with creating our MakerSpace at the school. The materials donated were immediately put to use and the students were so excited to dive right in and get started.
Last year before the pandemic the students were able begin working with many of the materials you donated and the higher-order thinking skills being used was incredible. Students gave very thoughtful explanations for what was created on a daily basis and the continued discussions were really remarkable.
We are hoping as things return to normal in the not too distant future that we will be able to utilize all the materials you donated to allow for more creative thinking and fruitful discussion.
Again, thank you for your heartfelt donation it means so much to our school community.”
With gratitude,
Mr. K.
STEM, STEM, STEM Help Us Move Into the 21st Century
Funded Dec 14, 2018The materials you donated to our Computer Club have had such a big impact on my students now and for future students who will continue to use them down the line. The Makerspace that I've been creating has been a long process and the help from you has definitely quickened the pace of making it a reality. The students couldn't get enough of the hands-on materials that helped them to problem solve real world issues and create using what they've learned about engineering, electricity, magnetism and more. Also, the 5th grade students helped me to curate the materials so they can be used for students in Kindergarten-5th grade in the future when the Makerspace is built up to full capacity.
Again, we thank you so much for your donation and look forward to sharing our experiences with you in the future.”
With gratitude,
Mr. K.
This classroom project was brought to life by Staples.Computer Club Robotics Class
Funded Feb 5, 2018I can't express how thankful we are with your donation to our Computer Club at our school. The students have grown so much in their problem-solving and creative expression with every moment they've been using these Lego WeDo 2.0 kits. Our club is only in it's third year but with this donation we have moved from merely being a Mouse Squad--troubleshooters of technical issues around the school--to actual creators of robots, coders, and solvers of real-life problems.
When we started the robotics project even I wasn't sure where we would start or where we would end up. First, we started by following what the First Lego League does by creating a real-life problem; the students chose the overflow of trash from heavy rain which doesn't make it to the treatment plant but rather runs off into the Hudson River. We tried designing our robots using 3-D software, but we had difficulty since we didn't have enough kits--the kids couldn't wrap their heads around it. When we did receive enough kits, thanks to you, we followed the Lego software platform and the students were able to create and program the robots and from there they took off.
Some students were able to continue with their original design while others needed to refocus and create completely new robots to develop and implement their strategies. All in all the robotics unit which I just started this year has been a tremendous success; the students have had such a great time creating their designs and robots and they can't stop talking about it throughout the school.
Again, I would just like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts, without you we couldn't move forward with this program and who knows, maybe you just helped develop a new professional robotics creator of the future.”
With gratitude,
Mr. K.
Poster Printer Supplies
Funded Jun 18, 2016During the past week students have seen the poster we created on the computer lab door to start the enthusiasm for the Hour of Code! Students have stopped me in the hallway to tell me about their excitement after seeing the poster and have been working really hard, during Computer Science Week, to try their hands at computer coding. In addition, when both students and teachers enter the computer lab they see the poster printer and share with me their enthusiasm for using the printer in the future for art projects, community volunteer/action projects and the like.
This donation has helped with the all around tone and moral of the school and we look forward to using it now and in the future.”
With gratitude,
Mr. K.
iMovie Documentaries
Funded Jul 13, 2016The headphones with microphones that I purchased for my class have been such a great help, not just for the IMovie Documentaries that we create for our Social Studies projects in 4th and 5th grade, but also to enable my 2nd-5th graders to use the headphones while working on coding puzzles during the Hour of Code--a time where over 400 million children from around the world practice Block Coding during Computer Science Week.
During our Documentary Unit the students are able to record their narration over the still photographs they collect on their specific topics like Digital Citizenship; students record their voices so children in lower grades watch these movies and learn how to be safe, responsible, and respectful on the Internet. This has allowed our students to really grasp the concepts and hopefully use these tools in helping them be model citizens in the future.
Students also use the headphones for typing programs we practice to learn keyboarding skills; they help them to stay engaged with the interactive lessons. The hope is that they will memorize the keys to not only help with their academic writing work, but also to use these skills in the future as possible Computer Engineers who can only make the high salaries as Code Developers if they can write the code fast enough to compete.
We really thank you for your donation to our cause, one that will help these students strive improve their coding, movie editing, and keyboarding skills.”
With gratitude,
Mr. K.
