The books I am requesting have all been carefully selected based on my students interests, experiences, and reading levels. I teach in a low-income elementary school where most of the books in the class library are about children who don't look like my children, or are falling apart. I want to enrich my kids curriculum with these selected texts, and show them that reading can help them connect to the world and school in a way they are lacking.
Some novels I have ordered in bulk ("Matilda" and "Walk Two Moons") to conduct novel studies, and some I have ordered individually, with specific students in mind ("Full Cicada Moon" and "Emmanuel's Dream"). The theme in my classroom this year is "Around the World" and I want to see that reflected in my curriculum as well. I am requesting "Inside Out and Back Again," the story of an immigrant child from Vietnam. This novel will not only teach whomever decides to pick it up about Vietnam, but will for many students echo some of the same experiences they or their parents have had as immigrants. Requested titles also include Peter Pan, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Little Prince, Inside Out and Back Again, Pinocchio, The Jungle Books and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Your donation will significantly enrich my classroom, and curriculum and will engage students in a way that is immeasurable. I saw it happen last year when I conducted some of the first novel studies the students had ever encountered, and I really hope to see it happen again in my classroom this year.
