Many of my students are motivated, smart, and creative individuals. However, the only thing that keeps them from excelling to their potential is their reading deficits and their inability to decode. In the NYC public school systems, dyslexia is not evaluated or diagnosed. As a result, many of our students do not receive the proper evidence-based interventions, are labeled as unmotivated and are made to feel s... in spite of various interventions put in placed. They are placed in special classes, and as a result of their low self-esteem, disruptive behaviors are replaced by creativity. Many students from low socio status without the support of teachers, parents, and community will, unfortunately, end up in penitentiary and dependent on the system to take care of them, without the career choices that they strive. As a dyslexia interventionist, I feel that I can help with your generous donations and the proper tools to help remediate this deficit (dyslexia). I strongly feel that this is a national epidemic which touches all race, creed, and status. However, the first step is to recognize that this is a real problem for our youth and adults
