  • Bronx High School Needs Yoga Supplies!

    Funded Dec 2, 2011

Thank you so much for your generous donations to the health and happiness of our school community. Yoga Club has been a wonderful experience for our students. They have to come to look forward to that hour and a half of the week that they spend focused on themselves: on their breathing, movement, flexibility. This practice gives them the chance to take a break from the numerous stresses of their hectic daily lives: difficult home lives, economic concerns, a variety of academic, and extra-curricular responsibilities. We leave Yoga Club feeling relaxed and rested and refocused. Your donations have made this possible! Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lewkowicz

  • Copies of Night so my Students Can "Bear Witness"!

    Funded May 14, 2009

Thank you so much for your very generous donation of 75 copies of Elie Wiesel's Night. In the spring, the sophomores in my World Literature class will be reading these beautiful, brand new copies of Night, as we discuss the literary and historical significance of this "slim volume of terrifying power" (NYTimes).

Last year, I did not have enough copies of Night and had to waste a tremendous amount of paper so that all of my students could read the book. My students were profoundly affected by the work and by the end of the unit, I felt even more convinced that I should continue to teach the memoir. Now, thanks to your help, I will be able to do so.

I asked my former sophomores to write the thank you letters, as they have read Night and know its power. My current sophomores will certainly be grateful to have such lovely, new copies when we read Night together this spring.

Thank you so much for supporting my classroom and the classrooms of this country that so need your support!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lewkowicz

I am trying to get 65 copies of Night for my students so that they can "bear witness" to the Holocaust. These books would be for my two sophomore World Literature classes. This is a tough group of kids who are not always excited about reading. Over the past two weeks, I have introduced them to the Holocaust and they are so interested! They are shocked by the atrocities and fascinated by the endless stories of courage, sacrifice and survival. As the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, I feel especially passionate about the topic and want to teach these kids Night--but alas! The school only has a handful of copies (I thought we had a full set, which is why I started teaching it already) and has no more money to buy books this year.
