  • Atlases to Find Your Place in the World

    Funded Jan 8, 2023

My apologies for the long delay in expressing my students' and my appreciation for getting us a new set of Atlases. My students really love having the new atlases to help them with their daily work at learning about our world and their place in it.

We use the atlases almost every day. The students answer basic "warm up" geography questions to get their minds focused on our subject. Questions such as "What countries border Zaire" or "What is the capital of The Netherlands." We then often use the atlas to cover other related topics such as population density, geographical terms, climate, and environments to name a few. This makes it easier to relate to our current area of study because I can use the environmental factors to help explain the rise and fall of different societies or why empires/kingdoms came and went.

I would just like you all to know that your donations are appreciated, and are being put to use every school day. If this experience lights up curiosity for even a small percentage of students I consider it an easy victory.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Gibb

  • Altases to Find Your Place in the World!

    Funded Nov 28, 2018

Thank you so much for helping my classes get new school Atlases. We have been using them daily, and the students appreciate the new materials! Our old atlases were literally shredding and falling apart, so this is a great improvement.

Many students have been impressed with the information in these new books, which are a different publisher than the old set. We have been spending time learning from the feature pages in the introduction section, subjects such as What kind of Maps are there, Earth Dynamics, Geographic features, Climate, and environmental issues. These sections dovetail nicely with our current events studies, which often cover climate and environmental health issues.

Besides using them for general information, they have been very useful for specific learning, such as countries in Europe or Africa, geographical features of different places, and information about U.S. states, their capitals, largest cities and nicknames.

Overall the new atlases you helped fund are being used on a daily basis to educate my middle schoolers. Thank you for your generous contributions, and know that your donation is greatly appreciated!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Gibb

  • Atlases to Find Our Place in the World

    Funded Oct 26, 2016

There is nothing like looking at an atlas for information about the world around you. Students today are very Internet savvy, but for studying geography it can be difficult to do online. I am fortunate to have iPad mini's for my students to use, but the screens are quite small and not as accessible. Students can look up questions about geography online, provide an answer, but have no idea where they are learning about and how it fits into the larger world.

By using the atlases provided through your donations, I am hearing comments like "I really like looking at maps" and "It is easier to find stuff using the Atlas." Students are often sent on information scavenger hunts, learning how to use the index, Table of contents, and latitude and longitude to find locations. Believe it or not, these are skills that have quickly faded from students skill sets.

Thank you for your donations to my classroom. It has directly impacted the students' learning environment, and allowed me to teach geography in a way that otherwise would be impossible.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Gibb

My middle school students will use these Rand McNally Classroom Atlases to learn about our world. Nothing has shaped human history more than world geography. World populations have grown the most where the geography is suitable for survival. My students will use the atlases for basic geography assignments such as learning about latitude or longitude, or answering simple questions such as "What is the capital of Germany?" They will also be asked to dig deeper, and learn where the largest countries are, for example, or what countries have the largest populations. Or why so many great cities were founded and grew near oceans, rivers, or lakes. Maps and graphs on topics such as population density, world environments, energy consumption, and climate zones allow students to find their own place in a much larger world. Middle school students are searching for answers. Where and how do they fit in? Many students enjoy Atlas work, but with today's technology maps are becoming a thing of the past for young students. It is so easy to search the internet for answers, but in the context of geography I feel much is lost without the use of paper maps.
