  • Classroom Library: Help Urban Students Fall in Love With Reading!

    Funded Sep 18, 2024

My students are adoring your books. They're so proud to have a 'real' classroom library! Every Friday, we have independent reading, and the students brag how many library books they've read (I keep a chart with stickers for some friendly competition). We often talk about the books, which is a great feeling for me as their English teacher.

Each Friday, the students gather around the classroom set of books to either get a new book or take the one they're reading. Often this sparks discussions as to which books are their favorites. Some genres are particularly popular in my classes--manga/graphic novels, and psychological thrillers are the top two favorites here. Students read for a half hour, then analyze the text for setting, or character development, or genre signs, or literary devices, depending on the subject. It's a great way to end the week.

Many of my students said they "hated reading" before these books. But having books physically being in the classroom, plus having genres and stories they enjoy, makes reading fun. This is fundamental to their growth as students and humans. I am deeply grateful and I know my students are.”

  • We Can Do Math!

    Funded Sep 20, 2022

I'm sorry my thank you is late. I thought I posted a thank you already! I'm so grateful for your generosity. My students loved the math books and we used it all the time--it made math meaningful and exciting.

When they first saw the books, they had a fun time going through each book and declaring which was their 'favorite!"

We used these books every day and my students were always engaged. It's really important for them to understand how to apply concepts practically, and these books helped so much.”

  • They Look Like Us!

    Funded Sep 17, 2020

I apologize for the lateness of this post. I'd thanked you for your amazing generosity much earlier and only now see it never went through. Please know both the students and I were so excited by all the books.

It means a great deal to my students to be able to read books about people they personally identify with. Of course, they enjoy a fantasy or other book with characters and settings outside their experience. But it really helps engagement when the characters face issues specific to their own lives, or move through a setting they know.

I had several students who happily checked out the books for independent reading, and then shared their thoughts with me on return. And many students would beg me to read one of the books to the class. I usually don't experience that level of engagement.

Thank you so much for the donation.”

  • Learning Across Contents: Class Trip To Six Flags

    Funded Jun 1, 2016

Thank you so very much for your generous donation. Because of you, our sixth graders were able to go on an end-of-the-year interdisciplinary trip to the movies! Many hadn't been to a theatre, so this was a treasured experience. The donation went to payment of the buses, so my photos show how much fun the students had even just on the bus trip alone! :-)

The highlight however was the movie itself. Our interdisciplinary project was called "Lights, Camera, Action" and was focused on the role of film across the disciplines. In Math, students prepared menus from the concession stands and then figured out what they'd order, given a budget. In Science, the students learned about the mechanism of how a film is made. In Social Studies, students learned about the early history of cinema. And in Language Arts, students created their own screenplays and acted them out. So going into the movies was the culmination of all the preparation, and the students were really excited to see the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie, and tie it into all they'd learned.

On the ride back home, we talked about all the things we loved about the movies. Unsurprisingly - considering they're sixth graders - the favorite thing was the concession stand!

Thank you once again for making this trip possible. It was their only field trip this year, and they loved it.”

  • Mindfulness Training: Helping Students Self Regulate

    Funded Sep 7, 2016

Thank you so very much for helping to bring mindfulness into my classrooms. Because of your generosity, I was able to take a months-long online course, Mindful Educators Essentials from Mindful Schools.org. I've recently completed the course, and I'm just so happy and excited now to be applying all I've learned! My students really love doing mindfulness activities and often ask to do them!

As I mentioned, my students are at-risk on many levels--special needs middle school in a high poverty district in the inner city, most with additional emotional or self-regulation disabilities. So learning self-regulation and self-awareness is so essential in helping them focus and self-calm. Mindfulness has decades of research to show its effectiveness in helping students do just that.

This course really helped me learn multiple practical techniques to bring mindfulness to my unique population of kids. I enjoyed lectures, online class discussions and conference-call discussions, posts and reactions, and multiple video models of mindfulness in real classrooms. From my colleagues, I exchanged tips about solutions to specific challenges a classroom teacher may have, as well as additional resources. And I'm now on a Facebook page for educators who have graduated from this program, so I continue to use the networking forged in the course.

I now have fabulous and varied lesson plans, and have learned many different ways to incorporate mindfulness into everyday activities. I'm already noticing a difference in my class. I hope that by teaching my students mindfulness, I'm not only helping them with current academics and classroom focus, but giving them a tool they can use their whole lives.”

  • Life Essentials: Healthy Food for Growing Bodies & Minds

    Funded Dec 11, 2015

I can't thank you enough for your generous gift of healthy food to my students! As special needs students in a high poverty district, my students often come to class hungry. It goes without saying that this negatively impacts their learning. So your gift of healthy foods has been priceless. I can't tell you how their eyes light up as they eat their oatmeal, or bars (many hadn't tasted either before), and happily work.

An added benefit is that the food is healthy, and teaches them healthy habits for snacking. They were curious to taste the bars and the oatmeal, and they discovered they loved both. As one student put it, "It makes me feel good."

But your gift is not only about filling their bellies or even about nutrition. Their hearts are warmed too--they are so grateful for your generosity. They often say how nice it is that you think of them, that you care about them enough to give them this food. I wish you could see them as they munch on the food, sustained by its nutrition as they delve into their assignments. But the photos are the next best thing! Thank you so very much,”

  • Portable CD Players!

    Funded Dec 1, 2015

I can't thank you enough for your generous gift of the portable CD players! Although perhaps a little old-fashioned, the CD players are an amazing tool for learning for my for special needs students.

My students are typical middle schoolers in many ways, and love to learn about new, cool, and interesting topics that most students their age enjoy--gross bugs, travel to far away places, space exploration, heroes their age, predators and prey, and so on. Unfortunately, their reading level (preK to first grade) precludes them from reading many higher level books independently. One solution is to use audio books. This way, they can follow the reader, learn new vocabulary and more complex sentence structure, and be engaged at the same time. Luckily, I inherited a whole library of high-interest, engaging books that came with CDs--but unfortunately no way to play the CDs.

Enter you guys! Your gifts has made high-interest reading possible. The other benefit of using CDs as opposed to computers or tablets, is that the kids aren't tempted by off-tropic web content. They simply remain engaged in their book, which is extraordinarily helpful for my students, many of whom have attention and focus struggles on top of their reading deficits

This gift really helps my students fall in love with reading, learn new things about our world, and become more confident readers so they can eventually close the gap.

They like these CDs so much, they ask to please read some more when they're finished!!”

  • Phonics Come Alive!

    Funded Nov 10, 2015

Thank you so very much for helping to bring Phonics Come Alive! to the classroom. The kids are already loving it, and I'm already seeing improvement. As special needs students, their reading and understanding is at a much slower pace than typically developing students, yet they are also typical middle schoolers with teen interests. They are also increasingly aware that their reading is at a much lower level than some of their classmates', and it bothers them. What I do to help them is something called "response to intervention," which is to diagnose what exactly their reading needs are, and then to target these needs. In their case, after I ran several tests on them, I determined that they really would benefit from intensive phonics instruction. Phonics are like the building blocks of reading, especially for struggling learners, those with learning disabilities, and those with dyslexia. So I knew I needed to give them intensive phonics instruction starting with basic vowel and consonant blends-- but I didn't have all the tools. I have an excellent online program I use, but that's not enough; students need physical work with trained teachers, and they also need the tactile experience of reading actual books and working with a partner or a small group. I searched for the ideal book and found this one. And then you guys made it possible!!!

Every day we work on both reading and writing. I work on a variety of different approaches for the students, including daily journaling, reading middle grade books aloud and discussing them, and also working on their phonics. I've been able to incorporate this wonderful phonics book into our daily lessons! The kids work together in pair or small groups--they really love it. They actually ask me, "Are we doing that book today?" and are excited when I say yes. They're really proud at the progress they've made so far, and it really makes them feel nice that they each have their own book.

They are very grateful and appreciative, and proud of learning short and long vowels; I'm starting to notice them applying their learning to other areas. As one student writes, "I know you believe in us because you bought us new books." Another student says how you "want to make us learn." Another student says, "Reading is really important because I need to read to get to college and get a job and be successful."

Your gift helps them achieve their goals and makes them feel good about themselves because they know you care about them.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lambert
