  • Extending English to Excited Students and Their Families

    Funded Jul 30, 2019

Already, 8 students have taken books to work on with their families. They have been so excited with the different activities they can participate in with their parents. Some have taken the English Made Easy books to work on with their parents to help them with their English communication skills. Others have taken the activity books with the 100 words to learn by grade to improve their English together. The rest have checked out the bilingual books to read along with their families. It is so wonderful to have these resources as a beginning to what will hopefully become an even larger resource library. Thank you for the positive affect you have already had on the families at our school!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Morrow Lawrence

  • The Need to Read

    Funded Oct 20, 2017

Thank you again for providing leveled readers to our classroom. The students were excited to see the new packages arriving and to have new stories to choose from for station activities.

I now have the eight bins of books lined up below my board for easy access during station or silent reading time. Each bin has an activity related to character analysis in it so that the students can read a chapter and complete this analysis, and I can determine how well they are comprehending texts at their level. From this, I can determine if they can move up or should move down to a different level of books

These books have made our classroom feel special by having more chapter books on different levels that the students enjoy reading. These will be used throughout the year as students move through the levels of reading. The books donated are enhancing the students desire to read, which in turn enhances their abilities and adds to my knowledge of their comprehension.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Morrow Lawrence

  • More than Words: Building Language, Literacy, and Confidence in ELLs

    Funded Feb 4, 2017

Thank you again for the positive support you have given our students through the use of extra teaching technology and websites with content materials for our students. The interaction the students have with this in various ways enhances their background knowledge and literacy skills everyday! We utilize these programs daily with our various classes.

The programs from Starfall that we utilize include the daily calendar, phonics games, story reading, folktales, math practice, and vocabulary building. Our kindergarten students love to use the calendar each day to learn their days, months, numbers, and vocabulary such as "tomorrow and yesterday." The phonics games are used by students from all grade levels, as we have newcomer students in upper grades that can benefit from them just as much as our lower grade students. The stories bring these phonics skills into practice. Finally, the math games allow students to have practice with us while explaining what they are doing using vocabulary related to math. Starfall is and interactive asset to all of our students.

Reading A-Z and Razkids provides us with a plethora of leveled readers with content that relates to subject areas from science to social studies to health. We use these as read alouds to the whole group, partner reading, or individual readers. These books allow us to provide a rich environment through non-fiction and fiction stories on appropriate reading levels.

Enchanted Learning gives us a database of printables to supplement our lessons. The kindergartners have loved sequencing nursery rhymes from the printouts on the site. Fourth grade has used printouts on the colonies. First, second, and third have used graphic organizers related to reading and writing.

Each of these programs has helped enrich our learning environment in our classroom. The students all benefit from the extended support these programs have provided. We are truly thankful for your generosity in giving to our wonderful, motivated students!”

    Mrs. Morrow Lawrence

  • Please Turn the Light Back on our ActiveBoard!

    Funded Oct 4, 2014

Thank you again for supporting my ELL students; you have made our ESL classroom more interactive, and the students greatly appreciate it! With students ranging from minimal English (numbers and colors) to higher intermediate students, each one has benefited from the lights being back on our Activboard. The first major impact is that we can all watch videos on the screen, which builds great background knowledge and leads to meaningful discussion which allows the students to more thoroughly understand concepts. Another useful tool is being able to interact with the board for learning games. The students can come up and move items, click on answers, and write to answer questions on games or quizzes interactively. This engages them greatly during the learning process. We can all now write on the board as well. This covers skills ranging from sentence correction to listing to sorting. Finally, the students love to come up and lead reading on the board. This truly lets them take ownership of this part of their learning. As you can see, the contribution you have given us has been of great positive affect to my 44 students from or with families from Iraq, Mexico, Somalia, Liberia, India, Saudi Arabia, and Guatemala. We express great appreciation to you all!”

    With gratitude,

  • Science, Social Studies, and Math Through Literature

    Funded Oct 28, 2010

Thank you for the contribution of a wonderful set of content area (science, social studies, and math) books to our class! These books have been a successive resource in effectively adding to the understanding of topics in these areas by my ESL students in grades K-5.

The social studies books have been used to do research on historical figures and to provide more information about certain time periods in language that is more accessible. The math books have been checked out by 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders, who then are getting math information along with building reading skills. The science books have been a great asset to exploring concepts such as matter, force, and life cycles. These have lead to some exciting hands-on lessons that really made these concepts concrete.

We are sincerely grateful for the joy and learning that has come from these books!”

    With gratitude,

  • Widespread Weather Wisdom for English Language Learners

    Funded Oct 14, 2009

The weather materials you provided with your generous donation have already given much joy to my students! The kindergarten group especially has benefited from the weather board with the visual depiction of the weather that can be changed everyday, the flash cards where they can connect the picture to the words, and the books which tie all of the vocabulary into readings that teach them the science behind the weather.

As the spring begins, the weather equipment will be used to conduct experiments outside to really bring to life the words they read in the books. Each component ties together so nicely to give my students an introduction to the words, the ability to see them in context through the stories, and finally, the capability to connect it all through the games and experiments.

This great set of weather supplies is so extensive that I can use it with all of my groups, from kindergarten to fifth grade, effectively. It is such a great resource for my students to be able to have all of the visual and hands-on learning that you have provided. Thank you so much from myself and my students. It is very much appreciated, and it will be used for years to come!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Morrow Lawrence

  • Communication, Confidence, & Choice for Elementary ESL

    Funded Apr 21, 2009

I just want to say Thank You on behalf of myself and my students for your generous donation to our class. The bins for the library have allowed easier access to the books, and they are now sorted by theme. Every Friday, each class from 1st grade to 5th checks out a book, and this has expedited the process and made it more efficient for each group.

The class set of hands-free whisper phones is wonderful! The students enjoy taking them out to read back their writing assignments to themselves in order to listen for errors and to read along with read-alouds to help with their intonation, rhythm, and pronunciation. It is so helpful to have enough for every student in a group so that we can all work together. These have been a source of enrichment to our lessons, and I have been able to use them as a focus of some lessons (the whisper phones were especially fruitful to their participation during a memorable lesson using nursery rhymes). The whisper phones have helped increase their skills in reading, writing, and speaking, which has made them more confident in their abilities as students.

I again want to let you know how appreciative I am of what you have contributed. These items have enhanced our classroom learning environment greatly, and the students have reaped the benefits from your generosity.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Morrow Lawrence
