  • Books, Books, Books

    Funded Jan 26, 2022

Thank you so much for putting books in the hands of my online students! My students and I were thrilled with the variety of donated books and couldn't wait to read them. Students were challenged to read 50 books in 30 days to celebrate Read Across America. As a reward, students were able to choose their very own book to take home! Students who read 100 books got to take 2 books home. They loved the challenge and can't wait to do another one. My students have real books in their hands and they are motivated to read in order to obtain more books of their very own! These readers are developing their reading skills as well as nurturing a great love for reading all thanks to you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Black

  • We Need Some "Tech" In Our "Teach."

    Funded Oct 16, 2017

My students are enjoying our iPad so much! We have used it for reading, spelling, and phonics, as well as Math. It is an exciting time when students get to come to Teacher Table because that means they will get to use the iPad!

They love using the technology to learn Phonics. This week we have been learning the sounds that R-controlled vowels make. They loved playing a game on the iPad where they had to listen to the phoneme and then shoot the correct R-controlled vowel team that makes that sound. Then, they also read books on the iPad. They felt like that was somehow more fun than reading a real book. Others have really enjoyed learning how to spell words with different vowel teams through games that we have downloaded to the iPad.

We have also been able to target some skills for some of our struggling Math students. We have downloaded fast fact games and skip counting games that help our students develop their automaticity in these areas. My students also enjoy competitive games when we review concepts we have learned. One of their favorite review games is Kahoot. With the iPad we are able to form one more Kahoot group, which makes for smaller groups, resulting in a higher number of engaged students.

Again, thank you so much! It is really making a difference in student engagement in our classroom. Kids LOVE technology!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Black

Our class meets together every morning to greet one another, and we need a better meeting place! Currently, we are meeting on a small rug that is not big enough to fit everyone. Having a meeting rug that allows each child their own square to sit on would help students to feel like they have their own place. I'm requesting one A Place for Everyone Classroom Carpet to sit and unite as a class. A larger rug divided by rows and columns also provides a tool for learning about arrays, which is part of our second grade core. Having each row be a different color also lends itself to easier division of students into groups or teams for learning activities and games.
