My students are learning to convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages. Reading decimal place value is a challenge so the decimal place value cards will be used as a resource for my struggling learners. This will help them to read decimals place value and make the connection with the fraction notation. They struggle with understanding a visual and symbolic representation of the concept. When I think of using manipulatives, I think of the old proverb "I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, and I do and I understand." The use of manipulatives will keep the students engaged and bridge the gap from concrete to abstract thinking. The write and wipe boards will ensure increased engagement and class participation from all students as each student will be required to hold up their write and wipe board to show their answer to the problem being discussed. Manipulatives encourage active learning. The manipulatives will be paired with structured activities during instruction. The manipulatives will also be used as a visual aid to address misconceptions.
