Classroom Calming areas allows students to take time to recognize their big emotions and find the healthiest way to handle them by selecting/implementing a strategy of choice. Self-regulation is a life skill that students must work on to become successful lifelong learners and positive members of a community. The calm down area is for students who need a break, because they are frustrated or anxious. It is also used for students who have PTSD/ ED to de- escalate when they have become aggressive or angry. The bean bag chairs, weighted blankets, noise cancelling headphones and other sensory items can also be used as sensory stimulation for students with Autism and sensory issues.
Throughout the day, students may encounter tasks or interactions that overwhelm and frustrate them. Students may also feel a wide range of emotions during the day that could lead to negative behaviors when they're unsure of how to address or express their emotions. When these feelings take over, many students struggle with self-regulation and the use of coping strategies. The goal is to help our exceptional students understand how to use the different tools and sensory items such as putty, stress balls as well as books and visuals with calming strategies when they are experiencing overwhelming emotions and rejoin the learning environment in a timely fashion. Students learn best when they feel safe, accepted, supported, and loved. That's why it is important to help students with self-regulation. We want our students to know that we care about every part of them, their emotions, fears, and frustrations.
By donating towards our classrooms, you will help create a stable and safe learning environment for special needs students. The Calming Corner is a positive place that rewards students for keeping their emotions in check and using strategies to calm themselves down.
