  • SEL and the P177Q Urban Farm

    Funded Sep 29, 2024

Thank you for your generosity and supporting our Social Emotional learning on our Urban Farm. Our students with disabilities strive everyday to be the best that they can be. Sometimes working the urban farm can be overwhelming and challenging but it has brought great joy and comfort to them. Students are responsible for taking care of our chickens; feeding them, cleaning them and maintaining our coop. Students are also responsible for planting, harvesting, composting and general farm maintenance. These responsibilities are a lot for us as typically developing adults but our students feel empowered and trusted when they are working our urban farm. We are so grateful to all of you.”

  • Let's Make Earth Day Everyday!

    Funded May 10, 2024

Wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you for your generous support. My students were thrilled with the supplies we received. We were able to successfully use the materials you helped provide to renew our school garden and host a rededication ceremony. Students worked daily throughout the summer to build a place that reflects our commitment to sustainability, farm to table and self-care. Families and friends are also encouraged to visit our "urban farm." We hope that you enjoy our pictures and thank you again!”

  • Renew Our Garden

    Funded Jan 10, 2024

Just wanted to say thank you again for your generous donation. We have been working so hard on renewing our garden, if only we could get Mother Nature on our side. We would be further along. However, we have started seedlings and are looking forward to getting them in the ground. We have teamed up with other classes to weed and build our new garden beds as well. We hope to have a garden full of vegetables this summer. We will continue to update you as we move forward and hope that if you are in the neighborhood you will stop by! You can also follow us on Instagram @177flockochicks. Here is where you can see what we working on with our chickens and our garden!”

  • Gardening at P177Q

    Funded May 26, 2023

Students were so excited to see all the new plans and equipment we had received. We were able to work on new skills such as raking, planting and digging. We also worked on social skills, team building and communication.

Students were able to share with their parents via social media their experience. Students were also asked to share their feelings about the project using their preferred method of communication.

This project will have long term benefits for our students. We will need to maintain and winterize as seasons change. Students will continue to work hard on building a sustainable garden that inspires our community.”

  • ADL skills at home

    Funded May 4, 2021

Thank you so much for your donation1. Students have been able to develop skills like self care and organization of materials. They were so thrilled to receive their packages! Your generosity opened their eyes to a world of independence and self efficacy. Their parents began to see them developing these skills as well. Students were opening up about their experience caring for themselves and even made videos. We are truly grateful for your willingness to help us engage them in these skills. Thank you!”

  • Sustainability Challenge

    Funded Dec 1, 2020

Thank you so very much for your donations. In this challenging year my students have had to overcome very much. When my students opened there packages at home there was joy pure joy! Each student began using their new tools almost immediately! Having the opportunity to have hands on materials at home has benefited both my students and parents! Recycling is now a family project and a responsibility. Students have taken the opportunity to help neighbors recycle and compost. Students have begun their spring gardens with their own hone grown compost. Thank you again for this amazing opportunity!”

  • At Home Gardens & ADL Skills

    Funded Oct 1, 2020

It is a pleasure to write to you today and share what your donations have helped our class. We became at home gardeners, chefs and laundry fanatics. The tools you helped provide for us gave us an opportunity to stretch our learning even further.

I delivered the items to my students and their reactions were priceless. We have been remote learning since March and seeing one another via a screen doesn't cut it sometimes. Whether its a social distanced smile or a gloved high five the moment is something we shared that drew us closer together.

My students have continued to nurture their indoor and outdoor gardens using the tools you helped provide. They have drawn and written about their experiences in ways that I never thought possible. Their parents are engaged in their projects more than ever. This unity within my classroom is a true highlight for us all. We are grateful for your generosity and kindness!”

  • Home Gardening

    Funded May 28, 2020

My students and I wanted to share how your donation changed our learning experience. I delivered the items to each student and it was an emotional visit after not seeing them for months they joy that was on their faces was overwhelming. My students have built their own gardens at home and are demonstrating responsibility for those gardens. They've watched there root due gardens bloom and transplanted them into their backyards or their window boxes. Our goal in the future is to harvest our vegetables and cook with them. We plan to continue this on a larger scale throughout the 2020-2021 school year whether that is remote or in school. Another goal we have is to build a small working farm for all of our students to engage in. We again thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

At the RCOTC in Brooklyn, our students learn vocational skills that will help them to participate their local communities through volunteer work, or hopefully find employment after graduation. Additionally, our students who are diagnosed with Autism are taught through Applied Behavior Analysis teaching protocols. Supplies that are not a part of a typical curriculum are needed to teach behavior modification and daily living skills. With these materials, our students will have the opportunity to learn how to become independent young adults at home by helping their families with household chores such as setting the table, doing laundry, preparing food, etc. Our students will learn vocational skills such as filing, property maintenance, janitorial duties (Sweeping, mopping, wiping tables) that will enable them to gain employable skills and potentially volunteer in the community. Help them make the best of their time here at the , The RCOTC Center!
