Eric Jensen, author of Engaging Students with Poverty in Mind, states that there are four actions to elevate energy and focus within the classroom. They are "get students moving, energize students in their seats, lower energy to increase focus, and influence energy levels with music." With standing desks and non-conventional classroom seating options, students will be able to use three out of the four actions constantly while at their desks receiving instruction or working on projects and assignments. The standing desk allows students to stand, shift, change positions, move using the foot swing, and fidget, all while burning calories and without the restriction a chair brings. I can't control what happens outside the walls of my classroom, but I can help influence how they learn. When they are able to be more active in the class beyond a brain break, then their attention, focus, and stamina will increase.
By giving to my project you will allow my students to have an alternative place to work in the classroom that brings movement! According to a 2010 survey by "Kaiser Family Foundation - Generation M2: Media in the Lives of 8-18 Year Olds" says if you put together all the sitting a child does during their waking hours, it adds up to 85% of the day! I can get my kids up and moving during the 4.5 hours of classroom time I have with them each day through the incorporation of standing desks and different flexible seating options such as balance balls and wobble stools.
My students will learn more about themselves as independent learners and where they work best by having diverse flexible seating choices within the classroom.
